MU Online Philippines

MU Online Philippines is the first official service of the game in the Philippines. The game was originally published by Philippine live service game publisher Digital Media Exchange, Inc. on its Mobius Games portal from 2004 until 2012.

The service was originally a subscription-based game, before becoming free-to-play.

About

Launch: 2004-2005

In May 2004, Digital Media Exchange (DME) signed a licensing agreement with MU Online's developer and publisher, Webzen, to bring the game to the Philippines.[note 1]

Mobius Games held an EB party for MU Online at PCXpress Area, Alabang Town Center on October 30, 2004. On December 21, 2004, its Bahr server implemented the Dark Lord (v0.99z) patch. On December 27, the remaining server implemented that patch. The game was launched commercially in January 2005.

Popularity and decline: 2005-2012

From its launch until 2006, MU Online was the second most popular MMORPG in the Philippines, next only to Ragnarok Online. In September 2005, Carlos Rufino, DME's game director in charge of MU Online, the game had an active subscriber base of 20,000 a day.[1]

MU Online declined in popularity as more live service games were introduced in the Philippine market. More specifically, the arrival of IP E-Game Ventures, Inc. (E-Games) in late 2005 which pioneered the free-to-play business model. MU Online, at that time, was using a subscription-based model.

Despite the growing competition, the game retained a following and remained profitable to continue under Mobius Games.

Closure: 2012

In November 2011, Mobius Games announced that the license for the game had been up for renewal since August 2011. Mobius requested the same 3-year contract from Webzen. However, Webzen countered with "outrageous terms" that differed from those in the previous 3-year contract.[2] Unable to compromise, Mobius Games was forced to close the game down on January 12, 2012.[3] There was no account migration.

Esports

On November 6, 2004, Mobius Games held the Battle Soccer tournament at the Market! Market! at Taguig City. "Rebels" from Metro Manila/Cebu won to represent the Philippines in the MU World Battle Tournament.
