South Korean visa denial for Ragnarok World Championship's Team Philippines

In October 2011, five out of seven players of the Philippines' representative to the Ragnarok World Championship 2011, "Naked Nanaman?", were denied South Korean visas and were unable to participate in the tournament in South Korea.

This resulted in Team Philippines conceding in the tournament, which was held in South Korea.

Background

Ragnarok Online is an MMORPG that was published by Level Up! from 2003 until 2015. From 2004 until 2013, the game's developer, GRAVITY, held the Ragnarok World Championship (RWC) tournaments, which saw representatives from different Ragnarok Online servers compete in an offline event. In the Philippines, Level Up! held tournaments to determine which guild would represent the Philippine server in the RWC tournaments.

For Ragnarok World Championship 2011, the guild Naked Nanaman? won the qualifiers. Seven of its members would represent the country in the tournament, which was scheduled for October 15, 2011, at the AX Hall in Gwangjang-dong, Seoul, Korea.

About

On October 15, 2011, on the day of the event, Level Up! officially announced that five of the seven members of Team Philippines were unable to obtain visas from the South Korean embassy to travel to the event. Level Up! "exerted all efforts" to help the members obtain visas but were unable to reverse the decision. Team Philippines officially conceded the event. In the spirit of sportsmanship and camaraderie, the RWC 2011 tournament committee allowed Level Up! to field a team of Filipino players from Ragnarok Online players who came to Seoul to support the team.[1] The two members of Team Philippines did not wish to participate in the competition.[2]

The announcement was met with backlash from the community, which blamed Level Up! for the failure.

On October 18, GM Tristan (Mon Macutay) further elaborated on the ordeal as a response to the backlash. He claimed that the documents and requirements had been sent to the embassy in September. He also claimed that GRAVITY, along with the RWC 2011 committee, attempted to convince the embassy to approve the visas. However, the decision was final, and the embassy did not explain the reason for the visa denial.
