Delayed South Korean visas of Philippine representatives for League of Legends World Cyber Games Grand Finals 2011
In December 2011, two members of Bida Gaming, the Philippine representatives for the League of Legends World Cyber Games (WCG) Grand Finals 2011 tournament, had their visas delayed due to additional requirements of the South Korean embassy. The WCG Grand Finals was held from December 8 until 11, 2011, in Busan, South Korea. Bida Gaming was unable to participate in the tournament and was forced to forfeit.
Background
The finals for the World Cyber Games League of Legends Philippine Qualifiers were held by the game's publisher, Garena Philippines, on October 22, 2011. Team Bida Gaming fought and won against team Wild, securing themselves as the Philippine representatives for the then-upcoming WCG Grand Finals in Busan, South Korea from December 8 to 11, 2011.
About
On December 6, 2011, Bida Gaming announced on its Facebook page that it would not be able to compete in WCG due to visa problems.[1]
On December 8, 2011, one of Garena's eSports managers explained on the Philippine League of Legends forum that Garena hired a professional travel agency to help the players' visa applications. The requirements were completed two weeks before the event. However, two of the team members were suddenly required to provide additional documents - income tax returns and local bank certificates - which were difficult to obtain as their parents were working abroad. While the requirements were eventually completed, it delayed the release of the visas to December 12, a day after the WCG event. WCG authorities tried appealing to the embassy but failed to secure an earlier visa release date.
This resulted in Bida Gaming forfeiting all their matches in the tournament.
