Peenoise is a derogatory form of the plural Filipino word "pinoys". It is an insult used to refer to Filipinos who are toxic, obnoxious, or otherwise have performed undesirable actions and activities. The singular variation of peenoise is "peenoy".

Both terms originated from the Southeast Asian Dota 2 community. It has since transcended the gaming culture and became a common Filipino slang on the internet. It is often used by Filipinos as either forms of self-race criticism, or of self-deprecating humor.

Origin

Background of Dota 2

The WarCraft III mod DotA-Allstars was one of the most popular internet café games in the Philippines. Its standalone sequel, Dota 2 by Valve Corporation, was released on July 9, 2013.

Dota 2 is a live service MOBA game that has regional servers instead of dedicated Philippine servers. This meant that players from the Philippines were allowed to play with players from other countries. The game has text and voice chat functionalities.

Dota 2 esports and BeyondTheSummit

The terms "peenoy" and "peenoise" were popularized in 2013 with the release of Dota 2 and the rising popularity of tournament streaming on Twitch.tv. BeyondTheSummit (BTS), a now-defunct American esports production company, began its operations by casting tournaments for DotA-Allstars and Dota 2 on the Southeast Asian region. It had a large Filipino following as BTS covered tournaments which involved local teams like Mineski.

Non-Filipino BTS casters, such as American David "LD" Gorman, Australian David "GoDz" Parker, and Malaysian Chan "WinteR" Litt Binn, have tendencies to mispronounce the word "pinoy" as if it's composed of two different words: "pee" and "noy". Other foreign Dota 2 casters, like Australian Toby "TobiWan" Dawson, also mispronounced it similarly.

As more and more Filipino players transitioned from DotA-Allstars into Dota 2 in the mid-2010s, more non-Filipino players in the SEA region were exposed to the loud and toxic behaviors of Filipinos that were previously contained in internet café environments. This has led to negative stereotyping, and the community started to insult Filipinos as "peenoise" (pee noise, as in urination) in reference to how the Dota 2 casters mispronounced the word "pinoys".

Cultural impact

Both "peenoy" and "peenoise" have since been integrated into Filipino online culture. The term "peenoise" has been used by various clans, businesses, and organizations as part of their brandings. The most famous example is the gaming content creator Peenoise Realm.
