Mortal Kombat 2 (2026 film)

Mortal Kombat II is a 2026 American martial arts fantasy film and serves as a direct sequel to the 2021 Mortal Kombat film. The movie is directed by Simon McQuoid, who directed the first movie, and is based on a screenplay by Jeremy Slater. It was released in the Philippines by Warner Brothers Philippines on May 6, 2026, two days before the United States release of May 8.

It stars Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, who takes the role of the main protagonist from the largely unpopular original movie character Cole Young in the previous film. Mortal Kombat series co-creator Ed Boon serves as an executive producer and has a small role in the film.

The film is based on the Mortal Kombat video game franchise. More specifically, it is a mixed, loose adaptation of the first three Mortal Kombat video game storylines with elements from the alternate timeline introduced in Mortal Kombat 9, with the addition of Quan Chi. Some of the elaborate costumes in the film are based on the character designs in the Mortal Kombat 11 video game.

About

The film was originally set for release in the Philippines on October 22, 2025 (October 24 in the United States). On August 29, 2025, the film was delayed to a May 2026 release date. Karl Urban, the film's lead actor, hinted on his Instagram account that the movie was upgraded to a summer blockbuster release after the first red band trailer, released in July 2025, "smashed records with 107 million views in 24 hours".[1]

Some old marketing materials for the film, including the character posters, show the original October 2025 release date.

Cast and characters

There were no cast replacements from the previous film. Kung Lao, Kano, and Bi-Han (as Sub-Zero) were killed by the end of the previous film.

Philippine release

The film was released in the Philippines on May 6, 2026, under the international release date.

Two advanced screenings were held. On April 28, 2026, at the Uptown Mall Cinema in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig, and on May 4, 2026, in SM Megamall's IMAX cinema in Mandaluyong. Filipino Mortal Kombat cosplayers attended the event, most notably Prince De Guzman, who cosplayed as young Johnny Cage from the Mortal Kombat 11 video game.
