The head of the Philippine office of software giant Microsoft has confirmed that the company's next-generation game console, the Xbox 360, will be officially launched in the country.

"Definitely, we will have an official Xbox 360 launch in the Philippines," Antonio "TJ" Javier, general manager of Microsoft Philippines, told INQ7.net after a press briefing.

He said that Microsoft's Home and Entertainment Division (HED), under which the Xbox/Xbox 360 and the company's consumer products fall following its global reorganization, will be launched in the Philippines this July.

"We already have a manager who will handle the marketing of the consumer products division, and the infrastructure is already in place for the launch of HED in the Philippines," Javier said on the sidelines of Software Innovations Philippines 2006, a three-day expo at the Makati Shangri-La hotel.

Asked if he could give an official date for the Xbox 360 launch in the Philippines, Javier said: "I think after the launch of HED we'll have the formal launch of the Xbox 360 in the Philippines."

Javier, however, said that Microsoft Philippines might first launch the other consumer products under HED, including gaming mouse devices and other peripherals.

The Microsoft executive said that two authorized distributors have been appointed by HED for the introduction of the Xbox 360 in the Philippines, though he declined to identify them.

Javier also dispelled rumors circulating in the Filipino gaming community that Microsoft Philippines did not want to bring in the Xbox 360 to the country.

"This is the best-selling hardware from the world's biggest software company. How can anyone not want to bring this in?"

Javier, however, could not say if Xbox Live, Microsoft's broadband-only online gaming service that comes bundled with every Xbox 360 unit, would also be officially launched in the Philippines. A number of Xbox and Xbox 360 owners in the Philippines are already on Xbox Live even though it is not officially available in the country.

"I don't know," Javier said when asked about an official launch for Xbox Live, as he pointed out this would raise other infrastructure concerns, such as the broadband penetration rate in the Philippines.

The Xbox 360 was showcased in one of the booths at Software Innovations Philippines 2006 as part of the company's vision for the digital home.-inq7.net - See more at: http://www.gmanetwork.com/news/story/5679/scitech/microsoft-confirms-xbox-360-launch-in-rp#sthash.6Kurggkx.dpuf
