The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) on Monday lauded the Philippines' thriving animation and games development sector of information and communications technology (ICT) industry that has lured in over US$197 million revenue in 2014.
Figures cited by the DOST's Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Office showed the sector also has around 14,000 creative workers.
More so, the DOST-ICT Office pointed out, Filipino animators count on clients from the United States' biggest animation studios, including Disney, Marvel, and Universal, and Japan for game development.
Filipino animators, the ICT Office said, contributed in Hollywood's more prominent animated series and film, such as "Lilo and Stitch", "Tom and Jerry", and "The Lion ??King."
On the other hand, the development sector has its bulk of clients coming from Japan.
"This could explain why a number of Japanese video games express a hint of Filipino culture," the ICT Office observed.
The ICT Office, collaborating closely with the Game Developers Association of the Philippines (GDAP) and the Animation Council of the Philippines, Inc. (ACPI), has been encouraging the industry to develop original content and new intellectual properties.
Monchito Ibrahim, ICT Office deputy executive director, made this call.
"Our unique culture is something the industry should utilize. To date, most of our animated films and video games are third party developments for other countries," he said.
Meanwhile, Ibrahim acknowledged that some local studios have already started coming up with local animation and games.
He said "greater attention should be given in making more original Filipino content" and showcase the Filipino nation's culture, heritage and pride.
On Monday, the ICT-Office of the DOST, the GDAP, and the ACPI bared the winners of their first-ever ICT Creative Awards Nights in Pasay City.
Ibrahim said the event acknowledged outstanding talents in the industry.
ACPI president Miguel del Rosario shared the ICT Office's suggestion, saying the future of the industry lies in the creation of original content.
"We really need to step up our game in the creation of original content for the animation industry. And through our partnership with the government, we are confident that we (can) drive the animation sector to greater heights," said del Rosario.
